Young teenager Sam Witwicky becomes involved in the ancient struggle between two extraterrestrial factions of transforming robots – the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons. Sam holds the clue to unimaginable power and the Decepticons will stop at nothing to retrieve it.
What critics thought
Bay's blockbuster lands somewhere between spectacle and stupidity, and critics were split over whether that's a problem. The CGI robots and their battle sequences drew near-universal awe, but the human characters — and the film's willingness to sideline the Transformers themselves for long stretches — divided reviewers sharply. Fans of pure kinetic entertainment found plenty to love; those who needed story or character to hang it on left cold.
