Critics landed squarely in mixed territory, finding the film too timid to commit to its own premise. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher generate some goodwill, but reviewers kept circling back to what the movie refuses to do — take its female lead seriously, or give its most interesting supporting performers (Greta Gerwig and Mindy Kaling) anything meaningful to do.
