Tom Ford's second feature earned broadly favorable notices for its intricate nested narrative, with critics singling out Amy Adams and Michael Shannon in particular, and many treating the film's cold, stylized bleakness as a strength. A vocal minority, however, found the whole exercise morally suspect beneath its polished surface — the real fault line being whether Ford's glossy cruelty amounts to serious filmmaking or sophisticated exploitation.
