Now regarded as a landmark of world cinema, Rashomon was sharply divisive on home soil when it opened — Japanese critics found its philosophy muddled and its style uneven — while Western audiences and critics embraced it almost immediately, a gap that puzzled and stung the Japanese film community in equal measure. The film's lasting reputation was built largely abroad before Japan caught up.
