In the summer of 1983, a 17-year-old Elio spends his days in his family's villa in Italy. One day Oliver, a graduate student, arrives to assist Elio's father, a professor of Greco-Roman culture. Soon, Elio and Oliver discover a summer that will alter their lives forever.

Guadagnino's sun-drenched Italian summer romance drew near-universal critical adulation, with Timothée Chalamet's performance singled out above almost everything else as a career-defining turn and Michael Stuhlbarg's supporting work quietly stealing scenes. The handful of dissenters argued the film keeps too much emotional distance — and at least one queer critic found that distance a form of evasion rather than artistry.
