Critics were split down the middle on James Wan's underwater epic: admirers found its gleeful maximalism and operatic cheese a welcome departure from superhero grimness, while detractors argued the film can't commit to either sincere spectacle or self-aware parody, leaving a bloated, tonally incoherent mess. The visuals and action set pieces drew more agreement than the script, which nearly everyone conceded was weak.
