The third X-Men film lands in genuinely mixed territory: critics who valued the franchise's thoughtful first two entries found this installment thinner and more mechanical, while others were willing to take it as a perfectly serviceable blockbuster spectacle. The killing of major characters drew lasting fan backlash, and the film's relationship to the 'Dark Phoenix' source material was a particular sticking point.
