Vol. 2 earned broad approval but landed noticeably softer with critics than the original — the fun is mostly still there, but nearly everyone noted Gunn working visibly hard to recapture lightning in a bottle. The sharpest dividing lines were over Kurt Russell's Ego: some found him a welcome loose presence, others thought him badly miscast, and several critics agreed that the moment his grand backstory takes over is precisely when the film starts to sag.
