As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A genuinely divisive blockbuster: supporters found the Russo brothers' feat of juggling dozens of characters and a villain with genuine menace to be a thrilling, surprisingly emotional achievement, while detractors argued the film is structurally incoherent on its own terms — essentially a very expensive middle chapter that punishes anyone who hasn't done the MCU homework. The gap between enthusiastic audience reception and more skeptical critical opinion is real, and the ending in particular split critics between exhilarated and cheated.
