Widely considered the weakest of the Brosnan Bonds, the film split critics sharply: a handful found it a genuinely entertaining thriller, while the majority faulted a convoluted plot, tonal schizophrenia, and Denise Richards' performance as a nuclear physicist that became almost universally mocked. Sophie Marceau's villain was a rare point of agreement, with critics largely feeling she outclassed the rest of the film around her.
