Mike Sullivan works as a hit man for crime boss John Rooney. Sullivan views Rooney as a father figure, however after his son is witness to a killing, Mike Sullivan finds himself on the run in attempt to save the life of his son and at the same time looking for revenge on those who wronged him.

Sam Mendes's Depression-era gangster film earns broad admiration for Conrad L. Hall's luminous cinematography and the weight that Tom Hanks and Paul Newman bring to their roles, but the very qualities critics loved most divided them: several felt the film's gorgeous surfaces and stately composure kept the audience at an emotional arm's length, draining what should have been a gut-punch story of genuine feeling.
