Hollow Man

Cocky researcher Sebastian Caine is working on a project to make living creatures invisible. Determined to achieve the ultimate breakthrough, Caine pushes his team to move to the next phase — using himself as the subject. The test is a success, but when the process can't be reversed and Caine seems doomed to future without flesh, he starts to turn increasingly dangerous.

Critics broadly dismissed Hollow Man as a squandered premise, arguing that Verhoeven reduces an intriguing invisibility concept to little more than a slasher film with a science-fiction veneer and misogynistic undertones. The one point of near-universal agreement is that the visual effects — which earned an Oscar nomination — are genuinely impressive, even as reviewers insisted the film around them was not worth the spectacle.
