What critics thought
Critics were broadly negative on Reign of Fire, finding its dragon-apocalypse premise squandered by a thin script and underwhelming effects — though a vocal minority enjoyed it as a cheerfully unpretentious B-movie. The divide falls roughly between those who saw McConaughey's campy energy and the pyrotechnic set pieces as enough to sustain the fun, and those who found the whole enterprise grim, joyless, and narratively incoherent.
