What critics thought
Critics were largely unkind to this remake, targeting Louis Leterrier's direction, a weak screenplay, and Sam Worthington's flat lead performance above all else. The post-conversion 3D drew particular scorn for making the action scenes harder rather than easier to follow. A handful of reviewers found enough kinetic, guiltless spectacle to defend it, but the gap between that minority and the majority who called it a muddled, joyless blockbuster is the defining story of its reception.
