Critics landed in roughly mixed territory, granting that this sequel edges past the original while still finding the spy-spoof formula too broad and creaky to make good use of Atkinson's gifts. The divergence is real: some reviewers, particularly outside the US, were warmer toward Atkinson's physical comedy and characteristic flair, while the majority found the material beneath him.
