Mixed but leaning warm, with critics broadly agreeing that Bullock and McCarthy's chemistry is the film's engine — and that the script and direction do just enough to keep it running. The real debate is whether the formulaic buddy-cop scaffolding earns the two leads or wastes them, with some finding genuine wit in Dippold's script and Feig's direction, and others feeling the material falls short of what these actresses could do.
