Critics widely dismissed As Above, So Below as a squandered opportunity — the Paris catacombs setting and Dante's Inferno premise earned real curiosity, but most felt the film defaulted to found-footage formula before it could deliver on either. The recurring complaint wasn't that it was frightening in the wrong ways, but that it wasn't frightening enough in any way, with the supernatural third act drawing particular scorn for abandoning what little grounded tension the setup had built.
