Widely regarded as one of the best horror films of its era, It Follows won critics over with its slow-burn dread, widescreen visual craft, and the way it uses its sexually-transmitted curse as genuine thematic material rather than cheap metaphor. The one recurring note of hesitation — and it's a minority one — is that the film starts stronger than it finishes. Audiences have been somewhat cooler than critics, suggesting the art-house sensibility and deliberate pacing won't satisfy everyone looking for conventional scares.
