Critics were nearly unanimous in dismissing The Dark Tower as a botched adaptation — too compressed and incoherent to satisfy King fans, too mythologically murky to engage newcomers. The rare dissenter argued that its stripped-down, action-forward pace actually captured the spirit of King's fictional universe better than more reverent adaptations have, but that minority view found little traction against a tide of pans targeting the thin plotting, McConaughey's villain, and the waste of Idris Elba.
