Four teenagers in detention discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of. When they decide to play, they are immediately sucked into the jungle world of Jumanji in the bodies of their avatars. Critics landed in a genuine split: the charming ensemble — Jack Black in particular — wins over enough reviewers to make the film passable holiday entertainment, but skeptics found it a hollow, excitement-free exercise in brand recycling that coasts on franchise goodwill rather than any real invention.
