Wright's adaptation earned strong notices for its cinematography, production design, and a lead performance from Keira Knightley that most critics found magnetic — but the film also attracted sharp resistance from Austen loyalists who felt it sacrificed the novel's irony and social precision for romantic atmosphere. The casting of Macfadyen as Darcy remained genuinely divisive, with some finding him closer to the book's introverted character than Firth, others missing any emotional arc entirely.
